Maestros del tango argentino
Maestros del Tango Argentino is a tango label of Blue Moon and hence a sister label to El Bandoneón. At one time Blue Moon developed the two labels separately, placing the golden age material on El Bandoneón and the 50s material on Maestros del Tango Argentino, but later releases have blurred the distinction.

Marioneta was Floreál Ruíz's big hit with Alfredo De Angelis. Like many others, he took his songbook with him and went solo. As usual, the result was more money for the singer, but a less satisfactory outcome for the dancer.

Raúl Berón - Al Compas Del Corazón

Raúl Beron exploded onto the tango scene in 1942 with the innovative tango Al Compas Del Corazón, a great risk for his bandleader Miguel Caló. After Caló he was briefly with Lucio Demare for a few years, again producing music of high quality, and then joined the orchestra of Francini-Pontier. Here his repertoire was poorly chosen, but his career recovered in the 1950s when he finally joined Aníbal Troilo.
On this CD the first eight tracks of Berón with Miguel Caló are priceless and the tracks with Demare are also fine, but after this there is rather too much Francini-Pontier before the final two tracks with Troilo. Our recommendation: get Al compás del corazón on Reliquias.

A superb disc of Di Sarli's first recordings. The Di Sarli sound is much earlier in its development: less characteristic, more in the guardia vieja mould. Nevertheless, one can still hear, particularly in the piano playing, flashes of what was to come. This is excellent dance music and a very interesting disc.

This excellent release has first class transfers and good variety, heavily featuring Jorge Ortíz, perhaps his best vocalist. Flor de Montserrat is a superb milonga whilst the two waltzes, Loca De Amor and Tu Melodia are straight out of Biagi's top drawer. Arguably the most enjoyable Biagi disc - and out of print.

In 1916 Gerardo Harnán Matos Rodríguez sat down at a rented piano in Montevideo with the aim of producing a march for the forthcoming carnival, something to be accompanied on tamboriles (small drums) in imitation of negro dances such as the candombe. Somehow the work was taken to Roberto Firpo, who was performing at the café La Germinal. He added a third part, taken from a little known tango of his, La Gaucha Manuela (the first track on this disc) and arranged it is a tango. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Blue Moon are not the first to produce a CD consisting solely of versions of La Cumparsita but they are the first to approach the subject in a thorough and historical fashion. Consequently this is a really fascinating little disc. The first version here, that of Alonso Minotto was the third ever to be recorded - Firpo's own recording, the very first ever recorded (in 1916) does survive but with terrible sound quality - and the sound is truly remarkable for a recording made in 1917. The arrangement of the tune as we know it today is fully formed by the late 1920s. Since then everyone has had a crack at it.
Just why this tune has so penetrated the public conciousness remains a mystery. A fascinating document.

After omitting Cantando, her signature tune, from their first Mercedes Simone release on El Bandoneón, Blue Moon make amends here but this time omit her superb recording of the wonderful Negra Maria which they had included on their disc in homage to Homero Manzi. However I am being harsh, for there is a lot to enjoy here: the little heard lyric of Abandono, again by Homero Manzi, this time to music of Pedro Maffia, and the superb Milonga Triste, known to us only from Hugo Diaz's interpretation - Homero Manzi again, this time to music from Sebastian Piana. One or two of the 78s are a little scratchy but Mercedes Simone is a superb singer, one of my favourites, and this disc repays careful listening handsomely.

This album of Osvaldo Fresedo's earliest recordings, from 1927-28s, will amaze you with their charm and their musical genius. Moreover they have none of the cloying sweetness of Fresedo's 40s and 50s work. Take the opening track, Eduardo Arolas' La Cachila. Fresedo's arrangement is captivating, nothing short of brilliant.
The work continues at this quality. Essential.

Legend has it that it was Francisco Canaro (who else?) who had, in 1924, the genial idea of incorporating the cantor estribillista, the antecedent of the cantor de la orquesta. The estribillista sang not the whole lyric but typically just a single chorus. Roberto Diaz was the vocalist selected and he made his first recording with Canaro the following year.
As El Bandoneón imply in their title, the estribillistas are very much the forgotten voices of tango. This disc is the first to give a broad selection of their work and twenty different singers are represented. Presumably for reasons of recording quality all but three of these tracks date from the 1930s.
The Orquesta Típica Victor was the group that made the greatest use of estribillistas - at least fifteen of them! Five appear here, although three of these tracks have already appeared on El Bandoneón. Here we find the main drawback of this very interesting disc - over half of the material here isn't new, and this is a disc that is likely to find its audience amongst those with quite reasonable collections. The delightful tracks from Fresedo and Di Sarli are taken from the new discs in this very batch of new releases. A slight disappointment as well is that we don't get to hear anything from Juan D'Arienzo who used Carlos Dante as estrebillista in 1928.
Nevertheless the new material is very enjoyable indeed. 1900 from the orchestra Los Provincianos (Ciríaco Ortíz's short lived orchestra) is a very unusual track, with what sounds like a bass drum underpinning a very jolly arrangement. Carlos Lafuente is outstanding on this track, with an offhand delivery that puts one in mind of Tita Merello or Mario Bustos. Of the two tracks with the Orquesta Típica Porteña the beautiful arrangment of Confesión is pure delight, whilst the entrance of the singer on El Flete - a track know today only as an instrumental - will befuddle you every time!
My favourite track on this disc though is one we skipped over earlier: Dejame Vivir, sung by Mariano Balcarce with the Orquesta Típica Victor. Balcarce has a rich baritone voice - dare I say reminiscent of Carlos Gardel - with a very particular use of tremolo; the simple lyric is very affecting.
This disc will not be for everyone but for those who like the older style, particularly if your collection is quite small, this would make an excellent purchase.

This is the second disc in the Blue Moon stable to cover Canaro's 1930s output which personally I find preferable to his 40s output which can veer towards the lightweight. There's plenty of great material here, most especially the milongas Milonga Brava and No Hay Tierra Como La Mía. However it's all also on the superb double album on their Los Grandes Orquestas series, so, unless you already have the first El Bandoneón disc my advice would be to get that double album instead.
