Cuesta Arriba
Tango Club
Cuesta Abajo, Cuesta Arriba
One of the themes of tango lyrics has been the idea of being dragged downwards by life:
cuesta abajo
(downwards) in Gardel's famous song,
or more forcefully, bajofondo
: down to the bottom,
a word instantly identified firstly with the famous lyric of Catulo Castillo, La última curda
(the final binge),
and now with the Bajofondo Tango Club
Now it's true that there's good stuff buried down in the mud, but this isn't an aspect brought out by tango lyrics!
So instead we've decided to call our club cuesta arriba
- upwards.
And there's a tango lyric with this title as well.

This month's cds (March 2009):
Roberto Firpo - De la guardia vieja
EMI 837577
Nowadays you can go out dancing for months without hearing anything by Roberto Firpo, but he was one of the true pioneers of tango in the early days, one of the most important innovators of his day. He began recording in 1912 and was output was prolific: at least 2861 recordings, concluding in 1959. Only Canaro recorded more. Over 2500 of those recordings were made before the end of 1931. That should tell you that Firpo belongs firmly to the la guardia vieja, the old guard. His compostions include some of the most famous in tango: Alma de bohemio, El amanecer, Viviani, Vea...vea..., as well as a huge number of others of less fame.
From 1937 onwards Firpo began to record alongside his orchestra with a quartet he called his cuarteto de la guardia vieja. Curiously, it's these recordings which we know best today, whilst the recordings of his orchestra have faded into relative obscurity. This cd presents some of the best cuartet recordings. Firpo's versions of Ataniche, El llorón and El esquinazo are simply the best.

Bajofondo Tango Club
Those who want it have probably got one by now, but well - here is one of the most popular cds to have come out of Argentina in recent years, and beloved of the tango nuevo community. Full of energy, even it's creators don't think of it as tango or even dance music but as "Buenos Aires music".
This is an album that gets played at "alternative" milongas but not at traditional ones. In the modern fashion, the cover mentions the name of the "artists" doing the mixing, but Roberto Goyeneche, whose fantastically gravelly voice is the one sampled in "Mi corazón" (from a 1989 live performance of the tango La última curda (the final binge) which is almost impossible to obtain) doesn't get a mention.

The Best of Astor Piazzolla
Another late Piazzolla compilation, this one released only this January. This cd does not justify its title, but it's worth it just for Ave Maria, which sounds as if it were composed by Ennio Morricone and lifted straight from the soundtrack of Cinema Paradiso!
