Cuesta Arriba Tango Club

Cuesta Abajo, Cuesta Arriba

One of the themes of tango lyrics has been the idea of being dragged downwards by life: cuesta abajo (downwards) in Gardel's famous song, or more forcefully, bajofondo: down to the bottom, a word instantly identified firstly with the famous lyric of Catulo Castillo, La última curda (the final binge), and now with the Bajofondo Tango Club

Now it's true that there's good stuff buried down in the mud, but this isn't an aspect brought out by tango lyrics! So instead we've decided to call our club cuesta arriba - upwards. And there's a tango lyric with this title as well.

This month's cds (September 2009):

Colección 78 rpm: Pedro Láurenz

EU 17015

Just how far ahead of his time was the astonishing Pedro Láurenz? Perhaps just three years: his tour-de-force, Arrabal, was recorded in 1937 and it's widely seen as having inaugurated the decade of the 1940s, despite not having a vocalist. Imagine the richness of De Caro's tradition (Láurenz played bandoneón in De Caro's sextet) but with the lyrical expression of Troilo, except more exciting, and you're halfway there.

Hear for yourself on this wonderful CD - the best Láurenz CD ever, eclipsing El Bandoneón. A bargain at this price, and likely to be the last time we are able to offer a EURO records CD at the club for a little while.

Juan D'Arienzo - sus priméros éxitos vol.1

We've been recommending other albums of Juan D'Arienzo for such a long time now (first the Solo Tango CD, and then the newer De Pura Cepa cd) that most of our customers have missed out on this great cd, stuffed full of early instrumental hits. We're now recommending it to absolute beginners.

Aníbal Troilo - Romance de Barrio (1947/1948)

BMG 663340

Did you love the Troilo Cd Cafetín de Buenos Aires (1948/1949) which we offered in July? Here's more, heavily featuring the wonderful Edmundo Rivero. Stand out track: it's a tough CD when even the awesome vals Romance de barrio (Troilo's own composition with lyrics by Homero Manzi) isn't the best track. No, that award goes to the super-nostalgic Sur, one of the great tango performances.

By the way, this CD has been renumbered from 659446 to 663340.

Track list

  1. Romance de barrio vals
  2. Sur
  3. Yira... yira...
  4. Confesión

dúo Ruíz-Rivero (10)

Francisco Canaro: Roberto Maida canta sus éxitos

Easily good enough to be the number one choice, but this week Roberto Maida's late 30s sides with Francisco Canaro are just making up the numbers. Pff.

Some great stuff, but don't get too excited by the sight of Milonga triste - it's a novelty track that you'll probably play once!

  3. Nada más
