Welcome to our Tango Music Club!
Nothing improves your dancing so much as a good feeling for the special qualities of tango music. The idea of the club was to help you build a library of good tango music, tailored to your own tastes.
The club ran for 8 years, from December 2008 to December 2015, but was forced to close because of the reducing supply of tango CDs, itself a consequence of on-line listening (youtube and spotify) and of course copying.

Unicos - Aníbal Troilo
DK 14142
Rare Troilo recordings from the early 1950s when he was contracted to the Argentine TK label. The only place to get this on CD now that Euro have stopped production.
The sound fidelity is excellent and so are the selections. The version of Quejas de bandoneón is Troilo's best, for my money. Fuegos artificiales is excellent, but even better is Ojos negros, whose arrangement and interpretation is so fresh that it's hard to believe that this tango dates from c.1909. Essential.
This CD is a copy of an LP, and reproduces a mistake made by its ancestor: Track 10, El Marne, is not Troilo at all, but the orchestra of Pedro Maffia in a rare recording from 1959. Far from being a disappointment, this is an opportunity to savour the bandoneón playing of one of Troilo's greatest influences.

Osvaldo Fresedo / Roberto Ray: Tangos de Salón
TARG 41287
Osvaldo Fresedo positioned himself musically as the darling of the barrio norte - the upper class in Buenos Aires. As the 20s became the 30s, this meant that his style became more romantic and more sweet. By the 1940s, that sweetness could become cloying, but in the 1930s, with singer Roberto Ray, the formula was - like Goldilocks's porridge - just right.
This is the kind of music that you would expect to hear in the Palm Court of the Waldorf Hotel as smartly dressed waiters glide amongst an elegant, sophisticated clientele serving champagne and cocktails. If that sounds like you, then you'll enjoy this music as well.
On this cd there are no milongas, and no valses either. Whilst Canaro was experimenting with new rhythms, Fresedo's idea of adventure is Isla de Capri, a North American composition which combined the rhythm of tango with the fox-trot.
That's not to say that there's no rhythm here - in En la huella del dolor Fresedo shows that he hasn't forgotten the rhytmic sensibility that made his work in the late 1920s so outstanding - but it's the melody that is emphasised. Many of these tracks are real classics, and some (such as Vida mía) are identified exclusively with the orchestra. It's not tango of the street - it's tango of the salón. Posh tango!

Francisco Canaro: Roberto Maida canta sus éxitos
Roberto Maida's late 30s sides with Francisco Canaro (that's them on the seminal Poema
) are consistently wonderful and this CD presents some of their finest work.
Some great stuff including the awesome Milonga criolla - but don't get too excited by the sight of Milonga triste - it's a novelty track that you'll probably play once! All three valses ae delightful, and of the great tangos Mano a mano and El adiós are standouts - the latter in an interpretation that successfully escapes the gravity of Donato's stunning interpretation.
