Lucio Demare

There's one word to describe Lucio Dmeare's music: lush. My apologies to anyone who is not a native speaker of British English. It is a music that is rich and sensual, occasionally strong but without
Demare appears not overly concerned with commercial success (although he did also work in films with his brother Lucas) and there are relatively few recordings. His best singer was without a doubt Juan Carlos Miranda, the vocalist on the iconic Malena. Roberto Arrieta sounds much better with Demare then he does with Miguel Caló - whilst I feel the opposite is true of Raúl Berón, the biggest name here. The little known Horacio Quintana suits the orchestra very well and feels neglected.
The contribution of the violinist Raúl Kaplun to the Demare sound was definitive. Listen for his rich tone, sharp attack and powerful arrastre leading the string section.

Lucio Demare - Sus éxitos con Miranda, Berón y Quintana
EMI 529132
This is it - Juan Carlos Miranda's best tracks, including Malena. Quintana's Solamente... ella, a neglected masterpiece with a stupendous lyric from - who else? Homero Manzi. Igual que un bandoneón I enjoy even more than Tanturi's version. Just buy one.
By the way, Carnavalito is actually a musical genre in rural argentina, and the theme is arranged as a milonga here.

Lucio Demare - Sus primeros éxitos
EMI 541698
These are not all the "early hits" promised by the title - the disconcerting version of Malena with Héctor Alvorado dates from the 1950s - but most of this is outstanding. Don't overlook the instrumentals, they are wonderful.

Lucio Demare - Sus éxitos con Raúl Berón
EMI 499978
That's right - Raúl Berón finishes third. Amazing. This disc is a bit of a slow burner. Berón creates a softer mood than Miranda or Quintana, and the music is less powerful although it loses nothing of its charm.
