Disco Latina

This Japanese label was one of the first to begin re-issuing tango music on CD. Forty discs were released in two series over the period 1990/1992 with extremely broad and intelligent selections encompasing all the great performers in the history of tango from Gardel to Piazzolla. Ten years on it remains the broadest catalogue yet released. Moreover, Disco Latina took exceptional care over the transfer process and the sound quality on these discs is excellent, something one particularly appreciates on the older material. Anyone who had bought the whole catalogue would be very pleased with their library although they'd be a bit poor: as usual with Japanese discs they are not cheap. On the other hand, as one website put it, the real collector cannot resist this material.

Help us re-construct the catalogue

Production has now ceased due to copyright issues and stocks are slowly running out. We haven't actually seen Disco Latina's original printed catalogue (if there was one) - the list here has been reconstructed from the discs that we've found. I'm still lacking track listings and cover artwork for some of the discs. If you can, please help us complete the catalogue.

Disco Latina CDL series

The first discs to be released was the CDL series in 1990/1991. This is a really superb catalogue. With the passing of the years, nearly all of this material has been reprinted elsewhere, but there are exceptions: Juan Cambareri is still unavailable elsewhere.

Disco Latina SDL series

After the completion of the CDL series Disco Latina embarked on a second series of 20 discs, SDL20xx, which were released over the period 1991/1992. This time Disco Latina took a lot of care over the graphic design of the covers - and charged an ever higher price!

Once again there are some real pearls in the catalogue. For many years the Fresedo disc was the only one covering his 1930s output.

The disc of the Cuarteto Troilo-Grela is the only one to present both their LPs on a single CD. These LPs were recorded many years apart on two different record labels and the feat of re-issuing them together is not one an Argentine record company is ever likely to manage. The 1962 LP is included on BMG's Obra Completa en RCA Vol.9. The earlier LP is sporadically re-issued on CD; currently it is deleted.

I am particularly found of the disc of Francisco Lomuto. The orchestra of Lomuto is often overlooked but these very early recordings have great charm and a unique flavour. This is the only place you can hear them.

Aníbal Troilo y su Orquesta Típica 1957-1959

CDL 3001

Marvellous Troilo from the late 1950s, including his first recordings of Danzarín and Piazzolla's Lo Que Vendra. Troilo was not with RCA-Victor at this time and so this material does not form part of BMG's reissue of Troilo's complete recorded work on that label, although they do include versions of those tangos recorded in 1963 for the seminal Troilo for Export.

Very unusually the disc also includes a malambo, Edmundo Rivero's Malon de Ausencia sung a duo by Goyeneche and Cárdenas. It's tremendous fun.

One of the best Fresedo albums ever, presenting only 1930s material, mostly with the Ricardo Ray - Fresedo's best singer - and including all the instrumentals, Tigre Viejo being especially welcome. Just two tracks with Ricardo Ruiz at the end so you can decide whether you like him or not. He's a bit too palm court for most, except in the valses (not included here).

Juan Maglio is, along with Canaro and Firpo, another of those artists of great historical importance who seems to have become more popular abroad than he is in Argentina.

These recordings from late in his career remain firmly in the guardia vieja mould. Many of them can now be heard on the El Bandoneón disc EBCD-86.

Cuarteto Troilo-Grela 1953-1962

This is the closest anyone has ever come to issuing the complete recorded works of the Cuarteto Troilo-Grela which issued just two LPs: the first in 1955, and the second on RCA in 1963. Of these, Disco Latina reproduce the first LP in its entirety (12 tracks) and we get the first 8 tracks of the second LP (10 tracks).

Since the two LPs were issued on different record labels it's very unlikely that an album such as this will ever be produced by an Argentine record company. The RCA lp is available from BMG on volume 9 of their Obra Completa en RCA (Complete Work on RCA). As for the first LP, it has previously been re-issued on CD but these re-issues are currently deleted.
