Colección 78rpm 2 (part 2)

In May 2009, Euro Records released five more CDs in their series Colección 78rpm 2, fully four years after the release of the second batch of 20 CDs in 2005. A sixth followed in December, and a great Canaro CD a year later (December 2010).

The discs continued to trickle out, with a fabulous CD of Juan Maglio and a puzzling one of D'Arienzo in 2011. The label was deleted in 2013.

Of the new releases, the Adolfo Carabelli cd will sell well but not as well as if it has only tangos, because there is no other Carabelli CD in print. Both Fresedo CDs are good, and the Canaro and Maglio CDs essential.

Adolfo Carabelli - "Mi Evocación" 1927/1935

EU 17043

Hurrah!

Not only is Adolfo Carabelli back in print - but this is a different selection of tracks to those on El Bandoneón.

Pianist Adolfo Carabelli spent many years as musical director of the Orquesta Típica Victor. Like that group, his orchestra only made studio recordings, never playing live. The groups sound similar but not the same - Carabelli's is more joyful.

The brown cover should alert you to an important fact: the tracks on this cd are mostly not tangos, but a mixture of tangos (6), fox trots (6), pasodobles (5) and valses (3), with a couple of rancheras and a rumba thrown in for good measure.

Track list

  1. Japonesita fox trot
  2. El aeroplano vals
  3. Sinvergüenza alabancioso ranchera
  4. Mentira

Voces Masculinas vol. 3 (1951/1961)

EU 17046

With the voices of Edmundo Rivero, Angel Vargas, Aldo Calderón, Dante Ressia, Roberto Rufino, Horacio Deval, and Raúl Cobián. As ever, the most satisfying tracks are the ones with guitar, or guitar and bandoneón, rather than orchestral accompaniment. Dante Ressia is the pick of the crop, the valses in particular are great.

Angel Vargas shines with the Trio of Alejandro Scarpino; the milonga Y taconeando salió suffers from the low fidelity so typical of the early 50s.

Osvaldo Fresedo - Tigre Viejo

EU 17048

Wow! A new Fresedo CD with the totally classic and hitherto unobtainable track Buscándote. (Collectors will spot that this is a re-packaging of BATC's Fresedo disc in their own private series, in which it was volume 14 - was, because it sold out).

There's more great Fresedo on this disc. The vals Amor is so romantic, you will think you have strayed into a 1930s movie by mistake; and when I heard Fresedo's La rumbita candombe, I expected Betty Grable to come on and start flirting with Don Ameche. If that's all greek to you, just rent Down Argentine Way.

There are some repeats with tracks you may already have on other Fresedo discs, but with 22 tracks of great quality including fabulous rarities such as Buscandote, who cares?

Track list

  1. El espiante (1933)
  2. Araca la cana
  3. Tigre viejo
  4. Adiós para siempre
  5. Amor vals
  6. Penumbras
  7. Mi gitana
  8. Si no me engaña el corazón
  9. Cuartito azul
  10. Careta, careta
  11. Esta noche
  12. Vamos cariñito (Vamos corazón)
  13. Marcas
  14. Buscandote
  15. Rodríguez Peña
  16. Por qué
  17. La rumbita candombe milonga
  18. Uno
  19. Milonguita (Esthercita)
  20. Na na
  21. Griseta
  22. El once (A divertirse)
  23. Volverás

Francisco Canaro - Pura Milonga (1932/1934)

EU 17049

A fabulous new CD on EURO Records of Canaro from the early 1930s, a time when he had a hard-hitting, strongly rhythmic sound that is a far cry from the Canaro-lite of the 1940s. Listening to this, it is easy to understand why he was such a force - the most recorded tango artist of all time. In this period, Pugliese and Láurenz are yet to emerge from the Decarean experiment, Troilo is still a jobbing musician in Cobián's band, and D'Arienzo is a partner in a second rate sextet with Luis Visca. Only Firpo and Fresedo offer real competition.

The CD proceeds in chronological order with tracks 1-18 presenting Canaro at his absolute peak in 1932. El acomodo picks up in July 1933. Even in this narrow period, you can hear his development.

Totally essential - how have we lived without it!? Hats off to EURO records for this great release, which is great value at 24 tracks.

Enrique Rodríguez - Esto Es Puro Compás (1937/1941)

EU 17050

At first I thought that this was a strange release, because you have all this on Reliquias. But I looked more closely and found that the selections are unimpeachable. If you should want only one CD of Enrique Rodríguez, this would be an excellent choice.

Juan D'Arienzo - Ataniche 1935/1939

EU 17051

Like the Rodríguez CD which precedes it, yes this is a very good CD, but this is a strange release really because the sound fidelity here is no better than a number of cheaper and more collectable D'Arienzo CDs. In short, Euro have given us nothing to tempt us to part with our money, and we won't be stocking this - special order only

Juan Maglio "Pacho" - La Guardia Vieja 1927-1932

EU 17052

Fabulous CD of the rarely heard Juan Maglio with really good sound fidelity and some rarities, such as two of the valses and a guardia vieja version of the Di Sarli standard Siete palabras. The violins wail, but not as much as with Firpo, the beat is solid, and Pacho himself delivers fantastic bandoneón variations. Eminently danceable throughout and very good value at 25 tracks.
