For a long time, most tango dancers' only exposure to the varied folk rhythms of Argentina is the chacarera. It has taken us a long time to find you some really good chacarera albums. We list them here along with one album of zamba, which is finally becoming more widely known (2012).

Vamos la primera!

I looked for a really good chacarera CD that I cold offer on this site for years. Finally I found one.

Los Manseros Santiagueños are synonymous with the folk music of the province of Santiago in general, and with the chacarera in particular. The group has been going since 1959: that's more than 50 years

This magnificent cd is a reprint of one of their very first albums. The sound fidelity may not be quite up to modern standards, but this is still the best chacarera album you can find because of the music. These older recordings have more charm than more recent ones.

Among the wonderful chaacareras it contains, my favourite is Que más se puede pedir (What more can you ask for), which conveys not just the joy of this dance, but the vastness of the pampa. No chacarera-lite here, this is the real thing.

Los 40 anos de Argentinisima vol.9 – Zambas inolvidables

Super zamba compilation. Three tracks from Los Fronterizos, including a recent version of the classic Zamba del pañuelo. This group from Salta began in 1953, dissolved in 1977 and reformed in 2000. Their very best years were from 1956-1966. Los Fronterizos revolutionized the way in which traditional quartets sang. There is also an older version but I haven't yet found it on CD. If you want the version by El Chaqueño Palavecino then you must buy the next album.
