Quinteto Don Pancho - Viejo tangos de mi florEMI 595154Quinteto Don Pancho was the original name of Canaro's Quinteto Pirincho, the quintet he formed in 1937 to make studio recordings of guardia vieja material. Track list

Mariano Mores - Temas MemorablesEMI 595155
These are modern recordings made with a sextet. There's a drum kit, xylophone, and the bandoneón sounds like an accordion. It's totally kitsch, but I find my foot tapping despite myself. You'll hate yourself for liking the gypsy version of Milonga triste, but no such problem exists with the massacre of El día que me quieras whose mutilated body is left bleeding in the gutter having received the full international tango treatment. This cd will be very popular with the ballroom community, but for fans of Argentine tango it's unforgivable. Mariano, how could you? Track list

Roberto Firpo - Tangos y valsecitos vol.2EMI 595156Ten tangos (well, old style tango-milongas) and ten valses from Guardia Vieja master Roberto Firpo. Track list

Osvaldo Pugliese - Tangos Que Traen RecuerdosEMI 595157Recordings made with Jorge Maciel on vocals from 1955-1959. This is the combination which gave us the high octane pyrotechnics of Remembranzas and Cascebelito and there are some great tracks here. Still, a whole album of this will be too much for most tangueros, which is a shame: this is heartfelt music. Track list

Héctor Varela - Noches De CabaretEMI 595158Lesica, Ledesma and Laborde and vocals. Track list

Francisco Canaro - Bailando Tangos, Valses y MilongasEMI 595159Reliquias's answer to EBCD-30: a starter album of Canaro's best material from the decade 1935-1945. With seven valses (including Desde El Alma and Corazón De Oro) and six milongas this album is a winner. A clear first choice for a Canaro CD. Track list

Pedro Laurenz / Ricardo Malerba - Grabaciones Olvidadas Vol.2EMI 595160Ten tracks each from Laurenz and Malerba. Of the 10 Laurenz sides, 8 fill in the end of his recordings on Odeón from 1944-47 and two (Amurado and Quejas de Bandoneón) are from the eight sides cut with Pampa in 1952/53. The sleeve notes claim that this CD completes the Laurenz discography on EMI but this simply isn't true. Ricardo Malerba offers fewer fireworks, but is one of those orchestras, like D'Agostino/Vargas, which is massively appreciated by dancers, blending a rhythmic approach with light romanticism. Enrique Rodriguez - Tangos, Valses y MilongasEMI 595165Armando Moreno is the singer for these tracks. Track list

Alfredo De Angelis - Los Priméros InstrumentalesEMI 595166A good De Angelis instrumental cd, but only his "first" instrumentals in the sense that he carried on recording right through the sixties and some of these tracks are from the 50s. Many of these tracks we've heard before on El Bandoneón, but of those we haven't the vals Imaginación is a storm. A good second CD of De Angelis. Track list

Nina Miranda - Uruguaya y TangueraEMI 595170Nina Miranda is a singer from Uruguay. She recorded on the Sondor label in Uruguay from 1947-1955 accompanying various orchestras including that of Donato Racciatti (32 tracks with him). In 1955 she began to record in Argentina, recording 14 tracks on Odeón backed by the singer Graciano Gómez before retiring at the height of her success following her marriage. She would have been about 24. Note: the cd cover claims to present only tracks with the orchestra of Graciano Gómez, but this isn't true. More information: Nina Miranda on Joventango. Track list

Rodolfo Biagi - Su Orquesta y sus CantoresEMI 595171Pursuing a problem of putting out albums dedicated to an orchestra's individual singers, Reliquias get a bit stuck when these singers didn't record 20 tracks apiece. An album like this is the result: a mismatch of tracks from different singers and different periods. Mysteriously it's the only cd on which Reliquias have reprinted the fine instrumental milonga Picante. At least that track is now here, but missing, despite half a dozen duplicates from other discs, is the tango Levanta tu corazón - not an especially great tango, but with it Reliquias would have completed their discography of Biagi on Odeón (with whom Biagi recorded from 1938-1946). In summary: a good album but there are other Biagi CDs you should get first. Track list

Enrique Rodriguez - Solos de OrquestaEMI 595172One or two strong tracks (El Morochito stands out) but without his singers these Rodríguez tracks sometimes feel a little weak. Not your first choice then, but the lack of vocal and Rodríguez's clear rhythm would make this a good album for teaching. Track list
