This English label has made a name for itself with some rare recordings of South American music, mostly from Cuba and Argentina, although the series also includes some amazing Hawaiian cds as well as Greek and Slavic music. Here we detail only the tango recordings, 27 cds in all, which all have excellent sleeve notes by the late tango historian Simon Collier.

There are some very good albums in the Harlequin catalogue. The Pugliese cd is the the which persuaded us to stock the label, and the cds of Argentine bands in Europe Buenos Aires to Berlin, Buenos Aires to Madrid, Buenos Aires to Europe and German Tango Orchestras 1926 - 1942, are just amazing.

The cds of female tango singers are simply wonderful but unfortunately all now out-of-print: try Euro records instead. Also very enjoyable is the cd of the Paris based Bianco-Bachicha orchestra.

Harlequin aren't re-printing CDs when they go out-of-stock. These we mark Deleted The rest are available from us priced £14.50 + p & p.

In 1920, Osvaldo Fresado, Enrique Delfino and David Roccatagliata travelled to the United States where the Victor Company assembled a band to record them. Historically, these are incredibly important recordings and the fidelity is outstanding for the time, but I actually find these recordings quite boring - collectors only!

Bianco - Bachicha: Tangos in Paris 1926 - 1941

Of the Argentine bands making music in Paris in the years before the war, the most enjoyable was undoubtedly that of Eduardo Bianco and Juan "Bachicha" Deambroggio. Although excellent musicians, the band don't take themselves too seriously and are sometimes highly melodramatic but at the same time they are careful never to veer into the camp, even if they come close on Plegaria.

The repertoire includes comic tangos such as A serrin a serran, a tango version of a Spanish nursery rhyme which we know as see-saw (although with a political lyric) and the irresistible Picolo Navio Del Maxim's which describes a drunken sailor navigating his way rather poorly through Paris's most famous café. Tremendous fun.

Instrumental Tangos of the "Old Guard"

1913-1930

This is the real guardia vieja: recordings by old time greats such as the self-styled tiger of the bandoneón, Eduardo Arolas - for most, famous only as the composer of Comme il faut, Retintín and Derecho viejo to name just a few of his compositions - and many others. A good compilation cd of this material - this was the only place you could hear these recordings for many years.

The Magic of Carlos Gardel

The selections comprise 15 commercial cuts (including a stunningly rare Mi Noche Triste from 1917) and 12 from his films, meaning that this is a cd more for collectors than for those who simply want to enjoy Gardel's voice. The Rhythm of Juan D'Arienzo

Great selection of D'Arienzo, predonimantly from the mid to late 1940s, but with a few tracks also from the late 1930s and early 1950s. This period has been under-represented in D'Arienzo reissues and so this cd was warmly welcomed by the cognoscenti - in fact, it sold so well that stocks are now exhausted! This was the second incarnation of the D'Arienzo orchestra. In 1940, little more than a year after pianist Rodolfo Biagi had left D'Arienzo to form his own orchestra, his replacement, Juan Polito, split from D'Arienzo taking the entire band with him. D'Arienzo made the young bandoneonista and bandleader Héctor Varela an offer he couldn't refuse, and he abandoned his own outfit to join D'Arienzo along with many of his musicians. This new orchestra included Cayetano Puglisi as first violin, although the solos D'Arienzo gave him mostly required the use of only the fourth string of his violin. Musicians were shocked, but D'Arienzo knew what he was doing and the public loved it.

A lot of the 1940s material Many of the tracks on this cd are simply unavailable elsewhere: El huracán, La payanca (1949), Vamos zaino, Sábado inglés, Loca are all unique to this cd, as are a couple of tracks from 1950: El Marne (1950) and Homero (1950).

We're not so concerned about the 30s tracks because we can get most of them elsewhere, although the transfers of Rodríguez Peña, Unión Cívica and El pollito are in fact the best on disc. But it turns out that this is also the only place you can hear the 1938 recording of Florida!

There are also some tracks with better transfers elsewhere: many of the 1950s tracks are now available direct from the studio masters, whilst Corrientes y esmeralda and El porteñito appear to be transferred a semitone too low, but I can't be sure without seeing the sheet music.

In summary then, a cracking cd. What a pity it's unavailable.

Osvaldo Pugliese: In the 1940s

This is the cd which made us want to stock Harlequin. Pugliese's 40s sides were amongst his best but are hard to find in good fidelity. With 26 tracks, not one of which is a dud - Pugliese didn't record any bad tracks in this period - this cd is superb value. I shan't review individual tracks: they are all fantastic. Please do listen to this undervalued music.
