Euro Records

Colección 78rpm
The second set of releases on Euro Records, Colección 78rpm presents golden age material from the BMG catalogue, recovered not from masters this time but as the name implies from 78rpm discs. Euro Records have taken a lot of care over this project, choosing only 78s in good condition and making good transfers in which the bass notes are more present than normal. I hear that many of the 78s are from the private collection of Carlos Puente of BATC.
There are some fabulous CDs in this catalogue. For the dancer, the Láurenz, Lomuto, and Donato discs become the standard cds of these artists, whilst there are also great discs from Di Sarli.
For the listener there are some wonderful discs too, particularly those collecting some recordings from the female voices of the golden age.

Francisco Lomuto 1931/1950EU 17001The best place to start your Lomuto collection. Tracks such as Si soy así have the trademark heavy beat which made this such a solid dance orchestra. Lomuto has Some of the repetoire in common with Canaro but the feeling is quite different, as for instance in the wonderful version of Quiero verte una vez más. First class. Track list

Osmar Maderna 1946/1951EU 17002In 1945, Miguel Caló's Orchestra of the Stars went supernova and its wonderful players went off to pursue their own artistic ambitions. Amongst them was their pianist, Osmar Maderna. His ethereal touch had been definitive in the sound of the Caló orchestra and led to him being dubbed the Chopin of tango. As with his contempories, his new outfit (formed in 1946) gave him more artistic freedom. This is most evident when he takes on Rimsky Korsakov's The Flight of the Bumble Bee and transforms it into a delightful milonga. Concierto En La Luna and Lluvia De Estrellas are less successful, sounding like little more than an opportunity for Maderna to showcase his piano playing. But Maderna is not a slave to innovation and he still creates some very danceable themes. The waltzes in particular are a delight. If the voice of Mario Corrales sounds familiar, then that's because this is non other than Mario Pomar, who would later succeed with Carlos Di Sarli's orchestra. Track list

Aldo Calderon Y Jorge Casal 1952/1957EU 17006Recordings by Troilo's singers after they had gone solo, very much in the 1950s Troilo style. Great singing, especially from Casal, but mostly not enough compás for dancing. Track listAldo Calderón y orquesta

Angel D'Agostino 1941/1953EU 17012The real deal - 20 tracks of Angel D'Agostino. Just six are with Angel Vargas, including one not previously reprinted on CD (Solo compasión). The instrumental La chiflada is also reprinted for the first time. The rest of the CD is dedicated to the singers whom D'Agostino recruited to replace Angel Vargas when he went solo, Tino García and Rubén Cané. Both were chosen for their resemblance to Vargas and Rubén Cané in particular does an excellent job of imitating his predecessor. Track list
Cantan:Angel Vargas (1,2,4,5,7,8); Raúl Aldao (6); Tino Garcia (9-13,19,20); Rubén Cané (14-16,17); Rubén Cané / Tino Garcia (18); |

Osvaldo Fresedo 1938/1948EU 17013Perhaps not Fresedo at his very best, but there are some good tracks here, even if the sugar content is a bit high at times. Best on Sunday afternoons. Track list

Orquesta Típica Victor 1930/1944EU 17014Produncing a good CD of the fabulous Orquesta Típica Victor shouldn't be difficult - just find 20 tracks in good fidelity and print them Nevertheless, Euro Records nearly snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by including 7 tracks selected for the RCA Victor 100 Años CD. Why would they do this? Maybe because they knew that BMG Argentina were going to delete that excellent release. With three tracks sung by Angel Vargas, this is an outstanding release. Track list
Cantan:Ernesto Famá (2); Alberto Gómez (3,6); Charlo (4); Carlos Lafuente (7,10,17); Angel Vargas (12-14); Mario Corrales (15); Alberto Carol (19,20); Instrumental (1,5,8,9,11,13,16,18) |

Carlos Di Sarli 1940/1943EU 17016Like that of his contemporaries, Di Sarli's output in the very early 40s is high energy and fast paced. This CD is full of top quality tracks that others haven't bothered to reissue. If you like Di Sarli, why wouldn't you get this? There's no reason. A fantastic album. Track list
Cantan:Roberto Rufino (2,7,17,20); Antonio Rodríguez Lesende (4) Agustin Volpe (6); Carlos Acuña (11); Alberto Podestá (14,15); Instrumental (1,3,5,8-10,12,13,16,18,19) |

Voces Femeninas Vol.2 1929/1961EU 17018I was shocked by how good this cd is. The best vocal interpretation ever of Fumando Espero; a rendition of Sentimiento Gaucho from Libertad Lamarque, whom I don't even like, to rival that of Nelly Omar; an exquisite vocal version of Amor y celos from Dora Davis. Track list

Edgardo Donato 1933/1941EU 17019Wonderful feel good fun from Donato, in many ways the precursor of D'Arienzo, but with a lighter feel. A lot of overlap with El Bandoneón, but a better place to start if you don't already have any of the El Bandoneón discs. Track list
Cantan:F. Gutierrez (2,3,5); Horacio Lagos (7-11,14,18-20); Lita Morales / Romeo Gavio (12,13,15); Horacio Lagos / Lita Morales / Romeo Gavio (16); Horacio Lagos / Romeo Gavio (17); |

Angel Vargas 1947/1953EU 17020Proving that Angel D'Agostino needed Angel Vargas just a little bit more than the other way around, Vargas split from D'Agostino in 1946. His first recordings with his own orchestra are successfully arranged in D'Agostino's style. The milongas in particular are really special. Track list
